The ‘father of the iPod’ helps Ledger build a new cold crypto wallet

Tony Fadell, the man behind the iPod, iPhone, and Nest Thermostat, is teaming up with major crypto wallet company Ledger to create a new cold wallet.
Hardware wallet provider Ledger, known for its cold storage devices, announced its seventh cryptocurrency wallet in partnership with the original iPod creator.

Tony Fadell, the inventor of the iconic iPod Classic, has teamed up with Ledger to help the company design its newest wallet device called the Ledger Stax. The company announced the news on December 6 at Ledger’s semiannual Web3 developer event, Ledger Op3n, in Paris. Ledger’s next new hardware wallet is a credit card-sized device that features a large E Ink display, capacitive touch, Bluetooth support, wireless charging, and more.

A first in the Ledger lineup, Stax features a curved E Ink display that can be used to display the owner’s name or other wallet information, like the spine of a book. The device is also equipped with magnets, allowing the user to organize the storage of several similar devices and “stack” them in order, and that is why Ledger Stax is called that.

When designing this device, Fadell had in mind what a modern stack of coins would look like. “He thinks of it two ways — the spine of the device is like a band around a stack of coins that shows you what’s inside, and you can line them up with magnets,” a Ledger spokesperson said in a statement. stated to Cointelegraph. Fadell, who also worked on the first three generations of iPhones, designed the Ledger Stax in collaboration with industrial design firm Layer. “We have to be friendly… no! An “exciting user” tool that brings digital asset security to the rest of us, not just tech enthusiasts,” said the “father of the iPod”.

According to the announcement, Ledger Stax will be available in the first quarter of 2023, and customers can now pre-order the wallet on Ledger’s official website. In the future, it will be available from select retailers like BestBuy in the US.

A Ledger spokesperson told Cointelegraph that the Ledger Stax wallet costs $279. The device is significantly more expensive than Ledger’s previous wallet, the Ledger Nano S Plus. Officially released in April 2022, the Nano S Plus is priced at $79 at the time of writing. The previous version, the Nano X, costs $149.
According to Ledger, the latest wallet product is designed to make interacting and signing transactions easier with touchscreens and larger screens. “Ledger Stax adds to our product line, rather than replaces anything, allowing customers to choose the type of experience they want,” the company said.
